Her Story

Ruby Dean Johnson, who later became Ruby Dean Truitt, is my grandmother. She is the mother of seven children—two girls and five boys—and the beloved grandmother to many. Ruby Dean was not just a family matriarch; she was also a foster mother and a dedicated nurse who continued to care for others even after retirement.

Ruby Dean was the soul, heart, flavor, and integrity of our family. Everyone loved her and spoke highly of her. She had a vibrant personality and was a talented singer who taught me piano, paid for my piano and organ lessons, and even served as the church secretary. Her big personality made her a well-known figure on our block, where our house was always open, and no one ever left without eating.

She instilled in me a love for music and a deep faith in the Lord. Ruby Dean made sure every guest felt welcome and well-fed, embodying generosity and warmth. She was a woman of integrity and strong character, leaving a lasting impression on everyone she met.

I made a promise to her on her deathbed to keep our family together and continue her legacy. I kept those Sunday dinners going, ensuring the family came together to share meals and moments, maintaining the traditions she cherished.

Ruby Dean was many things: a loving grandmother, a caring nurse, a devoted church member, and the heart of our family. Her legacy lives on through Ruby Dean Cuisines, where we honor her memory and the values she instilled in us. I love you, Grandma Ruby.
