Meet Chef D!

Chef D, hails from Long Island, New York, where he was born and raised. Now residing in North Carolina for the past three years, he is adapting to life in the South and enjoying the new experiences it brings. Despite the differences from the North, Derek finds North Carolina to be a great place to live and work.

From a young age, Derek had a profound love for cooking, singing, and family. He would accompany his grandmother, Ruby Dean, to church and cook with her. Her passing inspired him to honor her memory by sharing her beloved recipes with the world. Despite numerous challenges, he never wavered in his dream to open a restaurant named Ruby Dean’s. He seized every opportunity to cook for others, strengthening family bonds through his culinary talents.

Understanding the importance of presentation, Derek dedicated himself to perfecting his culinary displays. He even returned to cooking school to refine his skills further. While pursuing his passion, he also battled kidney failure and, after receiving a new kidney, embraced it as a second chance at life. He trusted in his faith to realize his dreams, which have now come to fruition.

Ruby Dean’s was brought to life with the support of wonderful people who believed in his vision. Despite facing various challenges—physical, emotional, spiritual, and health-related—Derek continues to move forward, bringing joy through food and inspiring others to persevere.
